We plan our festivals with great care. We buy sweets, prepare food, decorate our homes, and
invite family and friends. But how often do we plan for safety?
This Halloween and Diwali, let us make safety part of every celebration.
This Halloween and Diwali, let us make safety part of every celebration.
Halloween: Protect Our Children
Halloween is an exciting time for children. Many go door to door collecting treats. Some older children go without adult supervision. Young children should always be with a responsible adult. Older children should travel in groups, follow a planned route, and stay in touch with parents.Canadian fall weather can be cold, wet, and windy. Slippery leaves, dark streets, and busy roads increase the risk of accidents. Children should wear warm clothing, safe shoes, and bright costumes. Carry flashlights and use reflective tape. Parents should check treats for choking risks and food allergies.
Diwali: Lights, Sweets and Safety
Diwali brings South Asian families and communities together. Large parties, religious gatherings, and family celebrations are common across Canada.Candles, diyas, hot food, and fireworks can cause injuries. Keep flames away from children and decorations. Follow local fireworks rules.
Large stores and warehouses selling sweets, gifts, and festival items may become very busy. Crowded spaces, blocked exits, and unsafe storage can create serious risks.Business owners and event organizers should keep exits clear, provide first aid supplies, and prepare emergency plans.
At home, hosts should also watch for overcrowding, food allergies, and children playing near hot food or flames.
When an Emergency Happens
Serious injury, choking, fire, or breathing problems: Call 911 immediately.
Burns: Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes. Never use ice or butter.
Other injuries: Seek medical advice when needed.
Know your location and keep emergency contacts ready.
Safety Is a Shared Responsibility
Employers and event organizers have legal safety duties. These may include following fire rules, providing workplace first aid, and keeping people safe.Taking reasonable steps to prevent harm is called due diligence.
